August 17, 2021 is National Nonprofit Day!
National Nonprofit Day is August 17th, and as a nonprofit, Apelah uses its status to give back to the community and provide a positive impact throughout the state of Mississippi. Apelah is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, meaning we have been approved by the Internal Revenue Service to operate as a tax-exempt, charitable organization because we provide charitable activities, such as providing relief to the elderly, distressed, and underprivileged and lessening the burden of the government through our foster care and in-home personal care services.
Apelah’s foster care program focuses on specialized foster care, meaning kids who have a wide spectrum of needs from medical to physical to emotional. Foster parents who foster kids with specialized needs require training, and Apelah provides regular trainings available for parents on new or previously unknown situations that may arise with the child, as well as monthly trainings on different topics. Parents are also given a foster care case manager to monitor their progress and help coordinate appropriate services for the child, such as medical, physical therapy, and psychology appointments. These case managers are available 24 hours a day, and they check in with their families at least weekly and are available to take the children to appointments if needed.
Apelah also provides in-home for people with disabilities, the elderly, and veterans within our community. This service not only benefits the person receiving the service, but also family caregivers who may have other responsibilities like work and children. Apelah’s personal care attendants can help a loved one with activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing, tasks around the home, such as laundry and meal preparation, and companionship, like completing crafts and other hobbies, working puzzles, or playing a game. Having a personal care attendant in the home can also allow family members to have peace of mind that their loved one is safely taken care of at home while they attend to necessary errands outside of the home.
